My tree themed paintings are off in the world, having shipped them to the gallery before heading to the UK last week. 9 small-ish works as part of a group show with 3 other artists.
This became a very tight body of work, and hugely satisfying. Sometimes I resist a focused theme - I don't know why, but I often rebel when having to do anything! Even though trees have been my focus countless times, I like to just allow what arises to arise. But then again, being obstinate can be a real hinderance to one's career!
But I'm thankful for this new budding relationship with the Globe gallery in Santa Fe, so I got over myself real fast and just got down to it!
Getting over yourself as an artist is a good exercise to do on a regular basis. Sometimes we hold the process so preciously, when, as Chuck Close famously said, "Inspiration is for amateurs!" Getting to work is all that matters, and if we wait for all the conditions to be supposedly right, we lose so many opportunities to just make stuff.
Don't wait, don't be precious. Don't try, do. That's a lot of "Don'ts" for someone who resists that word! But sometimes tough love is what's needed to push through all the garbage thoughts that hold us back.
My internal voice can say - Oh Amy, you've done so many trees before, why again? But the fact is that I can never exhaust one subject, or even one color. Had I not shut down the internal editor countless times, the flow of works shown on this site, and in the world, would have log-jammed (pun intended), and I would be one more artist complaining about artist block.
In the end, I loved these paintings and was sad to let them go! And I am inspired to continue with this series. The truth is, I never tire of trees, and so it seems, neither do my collectors!
May they find their way to new happy homes.
I hope you will make it to the show in October if you are in Santa Fe! If not, you can see more of this series on my Artwork page under Recent Work. Click the button below.
Show opens Oct. 5, 2018 and continues into November.
